To follow up on the conversation that JC of From Grad School to Happiness in the comments to this post , go and read “The Next Job v. the Forever Job.” JC nicely articulates the way that academia encourages graduate students to think about their careers, and how this mindset doesn’t really translate to careers outside of academia. As someone who was working hard to land a tenure track job for most of graduate school, I can really identify with this. And I hadn’t even realized how much it had permeated my thinking or limited my imagination about careers post-academia. Thanks, JC!
Coincidentally, Julie at Escape the Ivory Tower put up a similarly themed post, “Go Ahead. Jump,” recently. I love this blog because I tend to be all doom-and-gloom about this process, but Julie makes it sound so exciting and sometimes I even believe her. Definitely worth a read for both a boost and some really solid advice.
